Player FAQ

Answers for players of a RustyThrones community website (for example play.rustythrones.com). Each answer links to the full guide page. The same questions are on the FAQ page of every community website; sections a community switched off are hidden there.

Getting started

How do I sign in?

Click Sign in (or the avatar button) and log in with your Steam account. There is no separate username or password: your Steam profile is your account. RustyThrones never sees your Steam password. See Sign in with Steam.

Do I get anything for signing up?

Yes. The first time you sign in on a community you get a one-time Registration Reward of 1,000 gems. You only get it once per community. See Sign in with Steam.

How long do I stay signed in?

One day. After that you sign in with Steam again, which takes one click. Sign Out in the avatar menu ends the session at once. See Sign in with Steam.

Is my account shared between communities?

No. Gems, quests, journey progress and purchases belong to the community you play on. Signing in on another community's website gives you a separate balance there. See Sign in with Steam.

How do I join a server?

Open Servers, pick a server and press Play: Steam starts Rust and connects you. You can also click the connect line to copy connect ip:port, start Rust, press F1 and paste it. See Servers and connecting.

Where do I see everything about me?

Your Dashboard shows your gems, the kits you can redeem, quests in progress, your journey and the servers you play on. See Dashboard.

Gems and the store

What are gems?

The currency of a community website. You earn them (quests, the journey, seasons, referrals, a monthly pass) or buy them by card. They are used for the store, tech tree research and custom kits. They only work on the community where you got them and have no cash value. See Gems.

How do I buy gems?

Click the gem counter in the top bar, pick a gem pack, click Pay, enter your card and confirm. Gems are added as soon as the payment is confirmed. Payments are processed by Stripe: your card details never reach the website. See Gems.

My payment went through but I have no gems

Wait a minute and reload the page. Check Billing History on your Account. If the payment is refused with an error, the community may not have finished its payout or legal setup yet: ask its staff on Discord.

Why can't I buy gems on this community?

A community can only sell gems and passes after it has finished its payout setup and its legal details. Until then the store is closed and payments are refused. See Gems and Legal pages.

How do I get my kit in game?

After buying or unlocking a kit, join the server and type /kit in chat to see your kits, or /kit <KIT NAME> to claim one. Each kit has its own cooldown (24 hours by default) and a delay after a wipe (4 hours by default); your dashboard shows when it is ready again. See Store.

Which server does a purchase apply to?

The server selected in the store when you buy. Stock, ownership and cooldowns are per server, so check the server picker before paying. See Store.

Why do I have to buy a bundle again?

A bundle you hold shows Owned and lasts for the wipe: a full wipe resets bundles ("All kits are reset on full wipe"), then you can buy it again. See Store.

Can I get a refund?

Payments go through Stripe and the store terms and the refund policy of the community are on its Legal page. If a payment is refunded or disputed, the matching gems are taken back from your balance. A purchase that fails after you were charged is refunded automatically. See Gems and Legal pages.

What is a monthly pass?

A subscription that gives you gems every month plus perks set by the community (in-game permissions, an animated avatar frame, a chat tag and a Discord role). Manage or cancel it from Manage subscription; perks last until the end of the paid period. See Supporter passes.

Tech tree and kits

What is the tech tree?

You unlock a workbench tree (one-time fee per server per wipe) and research blueprints item by item with gems, then build your own custom kit. Some trees may be hidden on a community. See Tech tree and custom kits.

Why can't I research a blueprint right now?

Research needs the server online and you connected to it in game, and it is closed for 4 hours after a wipe. If the game refuses a blueprint, your gems are refunded for it. See Tech tree and custom kits.

What happens to my unlocks at a wipe?

Tech tree unlocks reset at a full wipe (if the community keeps that cleanup step on). Gems are never reset. See Servers and connecting.

Quests, journey and seasons

How do quests work?

Daily and weekly objectives, plus quests that last a wipe and events. Progress counts automatically while you play on a server of the community (it updates about every 2 minutes); claim the gems when a quest is complete. At most 2,000 gems per day can come from quest claims. See Quests.

What is the journey?

A lifetime path of 200 levels in ten zones, from a beach to the launch site. Each level has objectives and a gem reward you claim on the site. It never resets on a wipe and has no daily cap. See Journey.

How do seasons work?

Each wipe you score points from your play; your season score is the sum of your wipe scores. A season runs from one force wipe to the next. Points convert to gems (10 points = 1 gem by default) and you claim them on the Leaderboard Season tab. Staff and owners are not ranked. See Seasons.

What do I keep after a wipe?

Gems, journey level, season points, your profile and badges. Things that belong to the wipe, like bundles, kit usage and tech tree unlocks, are reset depending on the wipe type and the community's settings. See Servers and connecting.

Account and community

How does inviting friends work?

Click Invite in the top bar to copy your link. When your friend signs in with it within 7 days of creating their account and plays long enough (120 minutes by default), you both can claim gems and a referral kit. See Referrals.

Can other players see my profile?

Yes: your name, avatar, badges and game stats are public. Your gems, purchases and the servers you play on are not. You can hide individual cards of your profile. See Public profile.

On your Account use the Link Discord card if the community offers it. Linking can give you a reward and the Discord roles matching your pass and kits. See Discord and chat tags.

What is my chat tag?

The tag in front of your name in game chat. It is chosen automatically: staff first, then your monthly pass, then your highest bundle tier. See Discord and chat tags.

Where can I see maps and the leaderboard?

Maps lists every map the servers generated, with monuments and a live feed of events. Leaderboard has the Season and This wipe tabs. See Maps and Leaderboard.

How do I report a player or get help?

Contact the staff of the community, on Discord if it has one (the link is at the bottom of the page).

How do I delete my data?

The privacy section of the community's Legal page explains what is stored and who to contact. See Legal pages.

Troubleshooting

The Steam login loops or fails

Retry in a normal (non-private) window and allow cookies for the site. See Sign in with Steam.

The Play button does nothing

Steam may not be installed or the browser blocked the link. Copy the connect command instead and paste it in the Rust console (F1). See Servers and connecting.
