Attach a server

Attaching connects a Rust server you already run to your community. RustyThrones controls it over WebRCON only: nothing is installed on your host.

Open Servers then New server and choose Attach your server (RCON). The card is disabled with the reason when attaching is off for your account or your plan's Attached servers quota is used up.

What an attached server can do

Capabilities depend on what your server has. The attach test detects it.

CapabilityAttached server
Live console, player list, kick/ban/teleport, chat, announcements, convars, give itemsYes (over RCON)
Restart and stopYes (RCON restart 30 and quit)
Start, wipe, game update, file manager, server config file, wipe schedules, plugin managementNo: "Available on servers hosted by RustyThrones"
Oxide permissionsNeeds Oxide/uMod or Carbon
Store kitsNeeds Oxide/Carbon and the RustyThrones plugin
Full player stats, map renderNeeds the RustyThrones plugin
Store extras (direct drop, supply signal), Discord, restart schedules, basic stats, map seed and sizeYes

The wizard's last step lists what you will be able to do and what to install to unlock more. Re-check later from the server dashboard (Capabilities > Re-check now).

Steps

1. Connection

FieldRule
Server addressPublic IPv4/IPv6 or DNS name. localhost, private ranges, link-local, cloud metadata addresses and RustyThrones' own infrastructure are refused.
RCON port1024 to 65535 (default 28016, your +rcon.port).
RCON passwordStored encrypted. Never shown again, not even to admins. Avoid spaces and / ? # % (WebRCON puts the password in the connection URL).

Enable WebRCON in your server's launch parameters and restart: +rcon.web 1 +rcon.port 28016 +rcon.password "your-strong-password".

2. Firewall

The wizard shows the IP address(es) RustyThrones connects from, with a Copy button each, and ready-to-paste snippets for ufw, iptables, Windows Firewall or a Hosting panel. Allow inbound TCP on your RCON port from those addresses, then tick I've allowed these IPs (or my server has no firewall).

3. Connection test

The test checks, in order: DNS, TCP, WebSocket, authentication, server info, framework (Oxide/Carbon) and RustyThrones plugin, over one socket with read-only commands. A pass is valid for 15 minutes and is used once.

HintMeaning
Timeout on TCPFirewall: allow the IPs from step 2.
Connection refusedWrong port or +rcon.web 1 missing.
Not WebRCONThe port is not a WebRCON port.
Authentication rejectedWrong password.
No replyServer still starting; retry.

Limits: 10 tests per 10 minutes per community and 3 per minute per target address. A refused target (blocked address) shows "We can't connect to this address" and counts towards the limit.

4. Details

FieldRule
NameRequired, unique in your community; availability is checked as you type.
Connect addressWhat players type in F1 (client.connect); filled from the address by default.
Game port, Query portOptional.

The page also shows what was detected: hostname, map, players, world size, version, framework.

5. Review

Summary of name, RCON address, the pinned IP, framework and RustyThrones plugin, then Attach server. If the test expired or the password changed the attach is refused (409) and you return to the test.

Update credentials

On an attached server choose Update RCON credentials (the same wizard with serverId) to test and save a new address or password.

Rules

  • Attached servers count against the Attached servers quota of your plan (Free 1, Community 3, Pro 10). Deleting a server frees the slot.
  • The connection always dials the pinned IP found by the test, not the host name.
  • Attached servers have no Wipe, Update, Files, Config or Plugins pages: those entries are shown locked.
